Bob Coy, the Florida Megachurch Pastor of Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale, has resigned after confessing to key leaders in his church that he had cheated on his wife. “Bob Coy reportedly confessed to key leaders that he cheated on his wife Wednesday. A board meeting was called the next day, when he resigned,” reported Local 10.com on April 7.
According to an April 6 official statement by the Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale, Bob Coy resigned as Senior Pastor on April 3, 2014, “effective immediately,” after having confessed to “a moral failing in his life” which disqualified the pastor from continuing his leadership role at the church.
“Pastor Bob will be focusing his full attention on his personal relationship with God and with his family. The governing board of the church is providing counselors and ministers who will help guide him through the process of full repentance, cleansing and restoration.”
Bob Coy was born in Royal Oak in Michigan on Nov. 27, 1955, and his full name is Robert J. "Bob" Coy. At the age of 24, Bob Coy left a wild Las Vegas life style to serve as an associate pastor at the Calvary Chapel in Las Vegas. In 1985, at the age of 30, he and his wife Diane moved to South Florida and began the Calvary Chapel of Fort Lauderdale. The church grew into one of the largest and fastest growing churches in the United States.
Bob Coy’s appeal to a wide audience was widely due to his unique style of teaching which related the ancient scriptures of the Bible to modern day life – an experience based on his own life.
In an interview with CBN, Bob Coy tells the story of how he went from managing an all nude girls revue for a casino in Las Vegas to finding a life in God.
“Getting involved in the casino life, I have now gone from rock and roll to sex and drugs and gambling. I remember on more than one occasion [that I was] not happy with who I was. Thus, enter my brother. ‘Hey, Bob, guess what? I gave my life to Christ.’ I said, ‘What did you do? Oh, you mean you got religion. You can’t drink, can’t smoke, can’t party. How sad.’ I actually pitied him.”
Just shortly after having expressed his feelings of pity for his brother who claimed that he had given his life to Christ, Bob Coy himself experienced a miraculous transformation.
After a night of wild partying at work during Christmas in 1980 and “living in the worst way I ever had,” he showed up at his brother’s house with a serious hangover and while spending the night on the sofa, began to read the Bible.
“I pick up the Bible, and I started reading the Gospel of John. I get to John 3:16, and at that very moment, something begins to break inside my heart. That breaking inside of my heart is so genuine and so true that I just begin to weep.”
“The next morning I wake up and everything’s changed in my life and in my heart. I drove back to the casino, and I walked in. I looked around, and I saw naked girls. It was like, Oh, I work here? Oh, boy. God began to convict me in such a gentle and lovely way that I don’t belong here. It’s time to make a change in my life.”
Even after becoming involved with the church and having eventually founded the eighth largest church in the United States, Bob Coy never forgot that a church is not about numbers but about meaning.
“There are things that have earthly value then there are things that have eternal value. You can be building an empire right now on planet earth and have a lot of monetary success and have a great title. When you get to the kingdom, if it wasn’t for a heavenly cause, it doesn’t have any eternal value.”
In response to Bob Coy’s confession about having cheated on his wife, many are responding with compassion to the pastor’s resignation on Calvary's Facebook page.
“Your doing the right thing , just not everyone can understand yet. Were all very hurt and rooting for our Pastor's restoration. At first I felt so hurt by it but than another Christian helped me understand. This is just part of the process. Im just heartbroken with all this happening, we are going to miss Pastor Bob Coy very much and we are praying for him and his family.”
Another supporter wrote the following words:
“My heart is breaking for my Church, my Pastor and his family. God is with us all who learn and grow so much from a man who always reminded us he was human and not one is perfect not even Pastor Bob but God gave him a purpose and he did well by God.”
And another supporter writes:
“Pastor Bob has a long history of dedicated service to the Lord. He built this church, brought thousands to salvation through Jesus Christ, radio stations, tv programming, multiple ministries, etc., and will be considered, remembered and beloved as the Senior Pastor who God used as a vessel to bring them to salvation. Pastor Bob is a true man of God and I believe he will come back even stronger. We all fall short at one time or another and the enemy always attacks God's strongest soldiers, especially now that his time is short. Put on the armor of God and stay firmly rooted in Christ. The enemy is always on the prowl ready to devour. God bless Pastor Bob and his family. May He bring healing, restoration, peace, and comfort at this time.”
Bob Coy is receiving an incredible amount of understanding, forgiveness, and compassion by his fellow humans. However, despite all of the support, the key leaders in his church announced in their official statement that in “the media ministry of the Active Word that distributes his Bible teachings through radio, television, and digital media has also been suspended.”
